This section compiles peer-reviewed scientific publications arising from WeTreat activities, addressing wetland-based solutions for micropollutant removal.
Custódio, L. et al. (2025). In vitro propagation of Limonium algarvense Erben: towards the conservation of a rare and endemic halophyte. Plant Cell, Tissue and Organ Culture, 162, 9. DOI: 10.1007/s11240-025-03129-9
This work establishes an in vitro micropropagation protocol for an endemic salt-tolerant plant, enabling the sustainable production of uniform plant material. Within WeTreat, this protocol underpins conservation actions and ensures plant availability for future applications in coastal and constructed wetland systems.
Hoornaert, H. et al. (2026). Physiological and biochemical tolerance responses of Limbarda crithmoides under acetaminophen exposure: Insights into plant–pollutant interactions. Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 329, 109640. DOI: 10.1016/j.ecss.2025.109640
This study investigates plant–pharmaceutical interactions in a native saltmarsh species, demonstrating tolerance mechanisms and high attenuation of acetaminophen under controlled conditions. The results support the role of saltmarsh vegetation in nature-based solutions for micropollutant mitigation within the WeTreat framework.
